The Halloween Hermit Crab (Ciliopagurus strigatus) is a species of marine hermit crab with a striking orange and black coloration, hence its name. It is a peaceful scavenger and is useful in keeping the aquarium clean of detritus and algae. These Crabs are relatively small, reaching a maximum size of about 1.5 inches in diameter, and are typically found in the shallow waters of the Caribbean and Western Atlantic. They are opportunistic scavengers and will consume a wide variety of foods, including meaty and vegetable-based items. In the aquarium, Halloween Hermit Crabs will require plenty of hiding places such as live rock, as well as a sand substrate for burrowing. They can coexist with other peaceful aquarium inhabitants, but may sometimes show aggression towards other hermit crabs or snails if resources are scarce.
