The Wartskin Angler, also known as the Wartskin Frogfish, has a unique and fascinating appearance. It has a stocky body covered in fleshy skin protrusions, giving it a warty or bumpy appearance, hence its name. The coloration of the Wartskin Angler can vary, but is typically a mottled brown, yellow, or green, providing excellent camouflage among the rocky reef where it resides. Like all anglerfish, the Wartskin Angler has a modified dorsal fin called an “illicium” that protrudes from the top of its head. At the end of the illicium is a fleshy lump called the “esca” that mimics the appearance of a small prey item. The anglerfish uses this lure to attract unsuspecting prey, which it then quickly swallows whole with its large mouth.
