The Hardwicke Wrasse, also known as the Indian Ocean or Sixbar Wrasse, is a colorful fish that can be found in the Western Indian Ocean. It has a striking appearance with six vertical bars, alternating white and black, along its body. The head and fins are a bright green or blue, and the tail is yellow with a black margin. This species is relatively hardy and can adapt to a variety of aquarium environments, but it requires a minimum tank size of 50 gallons with plenty of hiding places and live rock. It will appreciate a sand substrate for burrowing, and a tightly fitting lid to prevent jumping. Males of this species can be territorial and aggressive towards other males, so it is best to keep only one male in a tank with several females. Females tend to be smaller and less aggressive. This species is known to change sex from female to male, so it is possible for a dominant female to become a male if the only male in the tank is removed.
