The Japanese Trapdoor Snail (Cipangopaludina japonica) is a freshwater snail species that can also survive in ponds and other slow-moving bodies of water. They are called trapdoor snails because they have an operculum, a hard plate that they can use to close their shell opening when they retract inside for protection. These snails are usually brown or black and have a spiral, conical shell that can grow up to 2.5 inches in length. They are peaceful creatures that can help keep a pond clean by eating algae and decaying matter.
