Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse, also known as Pintail Fairy Wrasse or Splendid Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus katherinae), is a small, colorful reef fish that is highly sought after by aquarium hobbyists. This species is endemic to the waters around the Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, where it inhabits shallow reef slopes and lagoons. Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse has a slender body shape with a pointed snout and a large dorsal fin that extends almost the entire length of the body. The males of this species have a striking coloration, with a pinkish-orange body, bright blue markings on the head and fins, and a yellow-orange tail. Females and juveniles are more muted in color, typically displaying shades of brown or gray with subtle blue and yellow accents. Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse is a peaceful fish that can be kept in a community reef aquarium with other non-aggressive species. They are known to be active swimmers and jumpers, so a tightly fitting lid is recommended to prevent them from escaping the tank. In the wild, this species feeds on small crustaceans and zooplankton, and can be fed a varied diet of frozen or live foods in captivity. It is important to note that Katherine’s Fairy Wrasse can be sensitive to water quality, so regular water changes and proper filtration are crucial for their health and well-being.
