The Blue Spot Longspine Urchin (Diadema savignyi), also known as the Radiating Hatpin Urchin, is a popular species of marine invertebrate often kept in saltwater aquariums. It has long, slender spines that radiate outwards from its spherical body, which can range in color from dark brown to black. The tips of the spines are a distinctive blue color, giving this species its common name. The Blue Spot Longspine Urchin is a herbivore, feeding on algae and other small organisms in the aquarium. It is generally considered reef-safe, although caution should be taken with delicate corals and other sessile invertebrates, as the urchin may accidentally damage them with its long spines. In the wild, the Blue Spot Longspine Urchin can be found in shallow reef habitats throughout the Indo-Pacific region. It plays an important role in maintaining the health of coral reefs by grazing on algae and preventing it from overgrowing and smothering coral colonies.
