The Octopus is a highly adaptable creature that can change color to blend in with its surroundings. Those found in the Caribbean are typically brown with white spots. These nocturnal hunters feed on small invertebrates and sleeping fish using their eight tentacles to bring food to their beak-like mouth. The Octopus prefers an aquarium with plenty of live rock and hiding places, and a large area to move around in. They are best kept in a low-light environment with caves and medium to coarse substrate. To prevent the Octopus from toppling rocks, it’s recommended to anchor them or even glue them together. Additionally, the tank should be well-covered as they are prone to escape attempts. Nitrates and copper-based medications should be kept to a minimum as they can be sensitive to these elements. The Octopus is a challenging species to acclimate to a new environment and breeding them in an aquarium is extremely difficult. When approaching the Octopus, it’s recommended to do so slowly to avoid causing it to release its ink cloud in defense. Feeding them a diet of shrimp, mussel meat, and live crayfish or feeder shrimp is ideal. It’s also recommended to enhance the nutritional value of live foods with spirulina-based dry foods, plankton, and krill.
