The Hairy Pincushion Urchin, also known as the Sea Egg, is a species of sea urchin that can be found in the shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific region. As its name suggests, this urchin has a dense covering of spines that give it a “hairy” appearance. The spines can be brown, black, or grey and are usually long and thin. The body of the urchin is round and covered with small tube feet that it uses for movement and feeding. Hairy Pincushion Urchins are primarily herbivores and feed on algae, but may also consume small invertebrates or other organic matter. They can play an important role in maintaining the health of coral reefs by controlling algae growth.
