The Porthole Catfish, also known as the South American Porthole Catfish or the Callichthys Compressus, is a freshwater catfish species that is native to South America. It is named for its unique appearance, which includes a circular, porthole-like opening on each side of its head. Porthole Catfish are relatively easy to care for and can be kept in a community aquarium with other non-aggressive fish species. They are omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods, including pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. These catfish are also known for their peaceful behavior and can be kept in groups. The Porthole Catfish can grow up to 6 inches in length and can live for several years with proper care. They prefer a well-oxygenated aquarium with plenty of hiding places such as caves or driftwood. It’s worth noting that these catfish can produce loud grunting or croaking sounds, which is thought to be a form of communication between individuals or a warning signal to potential predators.
