Echinodorus martii, also known as the Ruffle plant, is an aquatic plant with long, broad leaves that have ruffled edges and short stems. It is an amphibious plant, and when grown out of the water, the leaves lose their ruffles and take on a rounder appearance. The Ruffle plant is a hardy and low-maintenance plant, but it is sensitive to copper and should not be exposed to this element. It can be used as a background or side plant in the aquarium, or as a focal point in larger tanks. It requires moderate lighting of 2 to 3 watts per gallon from full-spectrum bulbs (5000-7000K). To propagate the Ruffle plant, you can either use adventitious plants or divide the rhizome. When a new plant has formed its own leaves, it can be separated from the mother plant and relocated in the aquarium. The Ruffle plant benefits from regular additions of CO2, iron-rich fertilizers, and trace elements.
