The Sea Grass Wrasse is a species that is generally secretive and well-camouflaged, with a green to brownish-yellow coloration. Male Sea Grass Wrasses have a distinct cluster of black spots on the rear of the body, as well as a pair of curved dark brownish bands across the upper part of the gill cover behind the eye, and reddish spots on the distal parts of the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. To keep a Sea Grass Wrasse in captivity, it is recommended to provide a tank with a minimum size of 50 gallons with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding places. The Sea Grass Wrasse is known to feed on small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates, so a varied diet that includes meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood is recommended. In addition to a varied diet, the Sea Grass Wrasse requires a well-maintained aquarium with stable water parameters, including a pH of 8.1-8.4, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature of 72-78°F. They are generally peaceful towards other fish, but may become territorial towards other wrasses or fish with similar body shapes or coloration.
