The Spiny Box Puffer (Chilomycterus spinosus) is a species of pufferfish that can be found in the western Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the Gulf of Mexico down to Brazil. They typically inhabit shallow waters such as coral reefs, rocky areas, and seagrass beds. These pufferfish are named for the spines covering their box-shaped bodies, which they can inflate when threatened. They can grow up to 20 inches in length and are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates and algae. While they are not typically kept in home aquariums due to their aggressive and territorial nature, they are sometimes found in public aquariums.
