Yellowhead jawfish, also known as yellow-headed pearly jawfish, is a popular species among aquarists due to its interesting behavior and unique appearance. They are native to the tropical waters of the Western Atlantic, ranging from Florida down to the northern coast of South America.

Yellowhead jawfish are small, reaching a maximum length of around 3 inches. They have a cylindrical body shape with a large head and a protruding lower jaw. Their body coloration is typically light brown with a yellow head and a white belly. They also have distinct black markings around their eyes and on their dorsal fin.

One of the most fascinating things about yellowhead jawfish is their burrowing behavior. They create elaborate tunnels in the substrate, often lined with small rocks and shells. They will spend most of their time in their burrows, occasionally venturing out to forage for food or to defend their territory.

In the aquarium, yellowhead jawfish require a sand substrate that is deep enough for them to create their burrows. They are generally peaceful towards other fish, but can become aggressive towards other jawfish or similar-looking species. They should be kept in tanks with plenty of hiding spots and a varied diet consisting of live or frozen foods.

Breeding yellowhead jawfish in captivity is challenging but possible. They are mouthbrooders, meaning that the female will carry the eggs in her mouth until they hatch. Once the fry are released, they will need to be fed small, frequent meals of live or frozen foods.

Overall, yellowhead jawfish are a fascinating and rewarding species to keep in a marine aquarium, provided that their unique needs are met.
