Sagittaria platyphylla, also known as Broad Leaf Sagittaria or Chilensis, is a fast-growing, grass-like plant with broad leaves that are green in color. It can be placed in various locations within the aquarium, either as single plants or in bunches to add a variance of leaf styles in the mid-ground area. To prevent the entire leaf from decaying, it is important to trim any dead tips on the Chilensis. This plant is amphibious and can grow out of the water in a small aquarium, so it is recommended to provide moderate lighting of 2 to 3 watts per gallon using full spectrum bulbs (5000-7000K). Reproduction of this plant occurs through runners or seed production. Newly developed plants should be allowed to establish a root system and immature leaves before separating them from the mother plant and planting them in a different location. Regular additions of CO2, iron-rich fertilizers, and trace elements are beneficial for the Chilensis to thrive.
