Hard Tube Coco Worm (Protula tubularia) is a marine invertebrate that belongs to the family Serpulidae. It is a filter-feeding worm that builds a hard, calcareous tube to protect its body. The tube is usually embedded in live rock or coral substrate, with the worm extending its crown of tentacles out of the tube to feed on plankton and other small particles in the water. They are found in tropical and subtropical waters throughout the world’s oceans, usually in shallow reef environments. They are popular in the marine aquarium hobby due to their unique appearance and behavior. They can be challenging to keep in captivity, as they require pristine water conditions, a well-established and stable aquarium, and proper feeding. In the aquarium, Hard Tube Coco Worms require a substrate with live rock or coral rubble for tube building. They prefer moderate to high water flow and bright lighting, as they rely on photosynthesis from zooxanthellae (algae) living in their tentacles. They can be fed with liquid plankton or other small, suspended particles in the water.
