The spiny sea cucumber, also known as the green sea cucumber, is a marine invertebrate that belongs to the family Echinodermata. It has a cylindrical body covered in small spines and can range in color from green to yellow to brown. This species has pink and yellow coloration around the mouth and on its tentacles. They can grow up to 12 inches in length and is primarily a filter feeder, consuming small particles of organic matter that it sifts from the surrounding water. It is a peaceful species and is best kept in a reef aquarium with plenty of live rock and a sandy substrate for it to sift through. It is important to note that sea cucumbers are known for their ability to expel their internal organs as a defense mechanism, which can be lethal for the animal if it happens frequently or if the expelled organs are not regenerated properly. Therefore, it is important to handle this species with extreme care and avoid stressing it in any way. It is also sensitive to high levels of nitrates and copper-based medications.
