Hygrophila araguaia, also known as Hygrophila sp. ‘Araguaia’, is an aquatic plant species native to South America, specifically Brazil. It belongs to the family Acanthaceae and is popular in the aquarium hobby due to its attractive reddish-brown coloration. This plant is characterized by its thin, lance-shaped leaves which can grow up to 6 inches in length. Under high lighting and nutrient conditions, the plant can develop a reddish coloration on its leaves and stem. It can be grown as a stem plant, with regular trimming to encourage branching and prevent the plant from becoming too tall and leggy. Hygrophila araguaia prefers moderate to high lighting and benefits from regular fertilization with a complete liquid fertilizer or root tabs. CO2 injection can also promote healthy growth and coloration in this plant. It can be propagated through stem cuttings, which can be rooted in the substrate or allowed to float until they develop roots.
