Red Ball Sponge, also known as Orange Ball Sponge or Orange Encrusting Sponge, is a species of marine sponge belonging to the family Microcionidae. It has a round or ball-shaped appearance, with a smooth surface and a bright red or orange color. The sponge is found in shallow, tropical waters and can grow up to 6 inches in diameter. Red Ball Sponges are filter feeders, extracting small particles and organic matter from the surrounding water. They play an important role in the coral reef ecosystem by improving water quality and providing habitat for small organisms. However, they can also be a target for some reef predators, such as angelfish and butterflyfish, which feed on sponges. Red Ball Sponges are relatively hardy and can thrive in a well-maintained reef aquarium, although they may require supplemental feeding if the water quality is poor.
