The Sammara Squirrelfish, also known as the Bloodspot Squirrelfish, Soldierfish, or Spotfin Squirrelfish, is a strikingly colored fish found in shallow areas. Its silvery body is accentuated with stiated red stripes and golden yellow on the upper body, tail, pectoral and anal fins. To keep a Sammara Squirrelfish in captivity, a 70 gallon or larger aquarium with plenty of live rock, hiding places, and swimming room is recommended. Since this species is a schooling fish, it will do well with others of its own kind as long as there are adequate hiding locations and space. Sammara Squirrelfish primarily feed on small fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates such as worms and serpent stars. They are nocturnal and tend to hide during the daytime. When first introduced to an aquarium, live saltwater feeder shrimp should be used to entice the fish to eat. Their diet should be varied and include live feeder shrimp, freeze-dried shrimp, and chopped marine meats.
