The Horn Shark, also known as Heterodontus francisci, is a species of bullhead shark that is found along the western coast of North America, from California to the Gulf of California. These sharks have a stocky body and a short, blunt snout with two spines on the front of their dorsal fins. They are typically brown or gray in color with dark spots and blotches that provide camouflage against rocky reefs and kelp forests where they reside. They can grow up to 3 feet in length. Horn Sharks are carnivorous and feed primarily on crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish. They are slow swimmers and spend much of their time resting on the bottom. One interesting fact about Horn Sharks is that they are known to lay their eggs in rocky crevices and seaweed, where the egg cases (known as “mermaid’s purses”) are attached by long tendrils that help secure them to the substrate. The egg cases are typically 4-5 inches in length and have a distinctive corkscrew shape. After an incubation period of 7-9 months, the pups hatch from the eggs fully formed and ready to fend for themselves.
